The original structure, built on a Roman causeway and named after the Virgin Mary, was adorned with arches or bows on its steeples. In 1271 the steeple fell down, killing many of the congregants. The church shown on the token was designed by Wren and finished in 1680 after the original structure was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1666. It was said that if you were born within the sound of its bells, you were a true Cockney. Destroyed by and air raid in 1941.
