Peter Kempson's Buxton halfpenny made for William Robert Hay, Willam Orme and Thomas Tomlinson.  These men were enthusiastic numismatists and collectors who had this private token commissioned by Kempson. About 200 were made. The diesinker was Wyon. The fine Georgian crescent building was erected in 1785 by the Duke of Devonshire and had two hotels, a library, newsroom, baths, private residences, and shops. Hosted visitors coming for the restorative baths well known since Roman times in Buxton.
