Obv: A man hanging from a gallows, P(eye)T above the crossbar, a cap of Liberty on a pole behind, an obelisk inscribed 1796 on the upper part, PEACE on the lower part, a shield with an anchor and HOPE written above, symbols of religious and political power strewn on the ground below, LIBERTY AND NOT SLAVERY around. Rev: A monogram cypher, LCS, in center, DEDICATED TO THE LONDON CORRESPONDING SOCIETY in the outer ring; MAY THESE ENDEAVORS MEET REWARD in the inner ring. Edge: Milled.

Very Fine and mostly Choice. Scarce.

The London Corresponding Society was founded in 1792 as an advocate for democratic reform in Parliament. Its leading members were frequently targeted by William Pitt and the government, as they were seen as subversive elements of the populace looking to repeat the misfortunes of the French Revolution. This token has so much being communicated through visual metaphor on the obverse. A highly desired token in any grade.
