Obv: Lady Godiva on horseback, PRO BONO PUBLICO above, 1792 in exergue. Rev: Elephant and Castle, COVENTRY HALFPENNY around. Edge: PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE OF ROBERT REYNOLDS & CO.

Uncirculated. Much original color remains. Hard to find Godiva’s with any red on them. Rare thus.

One of the more popular tokens in the whole series, this commemorates the legend of Lady Godiva riding nude through the streets. Leofric, Earl of Mercia, was pressed by his wife to lower taxes on the poor of Coventry. He agreed on the condition that she would ride naked through the streets of the town. According to legend, she did just that, clothed only in her long hair.
