Obv: View of gate, SPON GATE around, TAKEN DOWN 1771 in exergue. Rev: Bust of Handel, GEORGE FREDERICK HANDEL. Edge: Plain.

Uncirculated and bronzed. Double struck reverse. Choice and Rare. Ex. Cokayne.

Spon Gate is no longer standing but was once in the west city wall just north-west of St. John’s. The reverse die showing Handel was originally designed as the obverse of J. Hardingham’s private token, the very rare Norfolk Norwich D&H 34-35. Kempson used this die to mule a number of tokens. Struck for collectors
