Born in Scotland, General Elliott would serve in the Prussian army before returning to England where he joined the engineer corps. He was wounded in Germany, but in 1759 was made commander-in-chief in Ireland and would go on to be responsible for the defense of Gibraltar after it was laid to siege for three years, seven months, and twelve days. This against the Spanish attacking the fortress by land and the French by sea. The cypher on the obverse is that of Peter Skidmore. A specious token made for collectors.
