James Atherton was an ironfounder in Bilston (Staffordshire) who was said to have supplied cannon balls to the government, as well as manufacturing nails and chape work. A chape is either the protective, metal sheath at the end of a sword scabbard; or the metal plate that connects the strap to the buckle on a belt.
