Lode’ in old English means ‘ferry’, which in this case refers to the ferry that would cross the river Severn to the church’s west side, which no longer remains. Like many churches in England, it was discovered during an archaeological expedition in 1979 that the church sits atop two ancient Roman structures. The Norman tower was built in 1190. Still remains standing in much the same condition as seen on our token.
