Obv: Naval officer standing next to a cannon. ADMIRAL GARDNER WORTHY THE FLEET OR THE SENATE around, ELECTION TOKEN below. Rev: A fox holding a pole on three blocks, inscribed CORESPONG SOCIETY, RIGHTS OF MAN, and WHIG CLUB. Obelisk on left topped with crown & sceptre, inscribed MAG. CHAR and BILL OF RIGHTS above. Clergyman propping up boxes with plank marked SEDITION and saying to the fox THIS IS YOUR ONLY PROP, to which the fox responds NO MAJESTY BUT THAT OF THE PEOPLE. Legend around the rim states SOME OF THE FOXES TRICKS ON A WESTMINSTER POLE, 1796 in exergue. Edge: Plain.

Uncirculated. Choice brown and Scarce. Penny. Ex. McKivor.

Admiral Gardner had this token made as part of his political campaign. The reverse features much in the way of political satire and lampoons his opponent, Charles Fox. He would go on to lose the election to Fox.
