The awarding of a flitch of bacon was popular tradition dating back to the 13th century and surviving to the 18th century in Dunmow. It was said that if any married couple after their first year of marriage could swear that they had never argued, fought, or regretted their marriage, they they would be awarded with the flitch of bacon. This token commemorates that custom.
