Obv: View of a public building, EDINBURGH HALFPENNY 1796 above, upon the ground in small letters WRIGHT DES., REGISTER OFFICE FOUNDED 1774 in exergue. Edge: Plain.
Uncirculated and almost fully red. Gem. Early Die State without the usual die crack on the obverse to the left of the building. Ex. Deane. Scarce. 11g. 28mm.
This beautiful token issued by James Wright shows the register office building, the repository of national records, legal contracts, and title deeds. Construction on the building didn’t finish until 1822, so the token shows us the imagined final construction of the building. Still stands today and is known as the General Register House in Edinburgh.
