Obv: Bust of Spence, T. SPENCE A STATE PRISONER IN 1794 around. Rev: Female seated, cap of liberty falling, ROUSE BRITANNIA above. Edge: plain.
Uncirculated and Choice brown. Proof-like with weak centers as usual.
The obverse die was made during Spence’s stint in Newgate prison after being arrested upon suspicion of high treason. He was held without trial and released on December 22. The reverse with the falling cap of liberty symbolizes Spence’s beliefs that Britain was losing its freedoms.
