The gate shown on the token was rebuilt in 1729, not 1733 as shown. The original Bishop’s Gate dates to Roman times and is thought to have been named after Earconwald, who was Bishop of London in the 7th century. The gate was rebuilt in both the 15th and 18th centuries, but finally demolished in 1760. The heads of many criminals would often be seen on spikes on Bishopsgate.
