Newgate was one of the original four gates granting access to Londinium, as London was known in Roman times. It was replaced once in the 12th century and called New Gate. Of course, Newgate Prison was first mentioned in the 13th century. The structure on our token shows the rebuilt gate after the Great Fire in 1666, which was built in 1670.
