This token commemorates the work of Thomas Coran for abandoned babies. Upon seeing a dead baby on the side of the road one day, he became determined to build London's Foundling Hospital. A basket was placed on the front door in which mothers could place their unwanted babies. The hospital cared for around 200 children maximum and turned out about 300 a year. Children would stay until they were 13. Handel donated an organ to the hospital, and Hogarth some of his paintings.
