Obv: A cask, JAMES POWELL IMPORTER around, 1795 below. Rev: J. POWELL WINE & BRANDY MERCHANT ABERGAVENNY, bunch of grapes below MERCHANT. Edge: PAYABLE AT MONMOUTH AND ABERGAVENNY . X .
Uncirculated with some lustre remaining. Choice brown.
James Powell was a wine and brandy merchant in Monmouth. A relative who operated the ‘Green Dragon Inn’ in Abergavenny also possibly accepted these tokens as the token says payable in both towns. Hard to find this nice with the reverse about as fully struck as they come.
