Obv: View of Soho, SOHO MANUFACTORY above, ERECTED 1764 below. Rev: Shield of arms, P. KEMPSON MAKER OF BUTTONS MEDALS & C BIRMINGHAM in three curved lines. Edge: Plain.
Uncirculated. Red & brown. Lovely ‘lights in windows’ effect.
Sadly, this structure is no longer standing and has been mostly replaced by row houses. There is an episode of the popular British TV show ‘Time Team’ where they uncover some of the remains of the old factory, giving us a clearer idea of where exactly it stood. Matthew Boulton and James Watt revolutionized coin making from this building, but they also made buttons, silverware, etc. A must have for collectors focusing on Soho Mint material.
